Weasel Identity | 80th Anniversary Shaw Air Force Base has been a beloved landmark in the City of Sumter, South Carolina community since August 30, 1941. Named in honor of WWI pilot and Sumter native 1st Lieutenant Ervin David Shaw, Shaw Army Air Field was transferred to the Air Force in 1947. Over the last 80 years, Shaw has been home to many different units and unique missions, but the bond between the Airmen and the Sumter community has stood the test of time.
